Description
The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies was founded in 1989 and it began
offering courses in 1990. The Faculty is located in the centre of Athens and
offers courses to nearly 900 students. It consists of three Departments: 1)
the Department of Social and Political Analysis of Communication, 2) the
Department of Culture, Environment, Communication, Applications and Technology
and 3) the Department of Psychology of Communication, Communication Practicing
and Planning. The Faculty has an interdisciplinary profile and the research
conducted by the members of the Faculty is focused on the following scientific
areas: political science, psychology, communication theory, new technologies
and their applications in communication, cultural studies, sociology,
linguistics and semiotics, journalism etc.
The
New Technologies Laboratory in Communication, Education and the Mass Media
was founded in 1996 and belongs to the Department of Culture, Environment,
Communication, Applications and Technology of the Faculty of Communication and
Media Studies. According to its constitution it serves both educational and
research needs of the Faculty in terms of the New Technologies and their
applications in communication, education and the media.
The Laboratory is situated on the 7th floor of the building at 5, Stadiou Str.
and the 6th floor of the building at 2, Kalamiotou Str.
The Laboratory undertakes research projects in the following areas:

theory and applications of the new technologies and their products,

development of communication practices in education and the Mass Media, the
new technologies and the digital process of information and its in
international networks,

development and evaluation of internet services,
-
design and development of multimedia applications for the internet,
-
visual communication,
-
human-computer interrelation and communication,
-
design and production of virtual environments,
-
electronic and digital art.
Apart from its research activities, the New Technologies Laboratory serves
educational aims and more specifically supports the following courses and
seminars of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies:

Human-Machine Communication,

Desktop Publishing,

Computer Assisted Research and Reporting.
The Laboratory provides to all the Faculty's students continuous Internet
access.
Activities
The Laboratory's activities include:
- Participation in the Research Program E.U. Initiative ΕQUAL «Forum for Equality and Social Cohesion».
- The Laboratory organized in November 2003 the 11th International Möbius Awards Festival for the best multimedia productions. This festival aims to promote the quality in multimedia creations in the fields of education, culture, science and fiction. Since 1999, the New Technologies Laboratory is responsible for the organization of the National Möbius Awards for the best Greek multimedia productions.
- The digital desktop publishing and the creative art direction of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens magazine Athena, which is published every three months and is currently in its sixth year of publication.

The development of experimental applications on the Web, as well as the construction and administration of websites. Among the projects undertaken by the Laboratory are included the development of websites for the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, the magazine Athina, the newspaper Kapodistriako and the University Research Institute of Applied Communication. The Laboratory WebTeam has also developed the Webradio of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies and many applications for the collection and processing of electronic data via the Internet.
- In the context of the Program «Seirines» (EPEAEK), the Laboratory had the responsibility of the design of the educational cd-rom «'21 En Plo».
- Participation, in collaboration with the European Universities Institut Superieur de Commerce Saint-Louis (Belgium), Universitè
de Metz (France), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal) και Kemi-Tornio Polytechnic (Finland) in the Postgraduate Degrees:
- European Master in Ε- Business Management
- European Master in Cybercommunication
which are conducted in the framework of the E.U. Program LEONARDO.
- Participation, in collaboration with the European Universities Institut Superieur de Commerce Saint-Louis (Belgium), Universitè
de Metz (France), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal) και Kemi-Tornio Polytechnic (Finland) in the Postgraduate Degree Program European Master in Audiovisual and Multimedia Business Administration which was conducted in the framework of the E.U. Program MEDIA II.
- The Laboratory has undertaken the project of the creation of a cd-rom presenting the history and current status of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
- In the context of the Program «Intercultural Approach of Myths, Mathematics and Learning Difficulties in the New Technological Communication Environment» (INTERREG II) the Laboratory was responsible for the creation of a educative multimedia cd-rom with the title «PERSEAS».
- The Laboratory, as a part of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies has organized many both national and international conference, such as «The Digital Challenge: Media and Democracy» Zappeion Megaron 2001, «The 'Construction' of Reality and the Mass Media» Zappeion Megaron 1996, etc.
Director
The Laboratory is directed by Professor Michael Meimaris. Professor Meimaris
has authored a large number of scientific articles, studies and books. His
interests focus on the introduction of New Technologies to Communication,
Education and the Media, Graphic Design and Computer Animation, the New
Technological Communication Environment and the design of its structure,
Multimedia, Open and Distance Learning, and the education of trainers in the
New Technologies field. He is the Scientific Responsible of programs involving
the conception, the design and creation of New Technologies applications, as
well as programs focusing on adult education. He has organized International
Scientific Conferences, Seminars for the European Union and he is a member of
the most significant Scientific Committees of his field of expertise.
